If you’re not using adapter software, check for current drivers , check for current drivers for whatever adapter you’re using.
Top
9. “MSCDEX” errors has being encountered.
a. Early versions of MSCDEX had problems with files names containing “illegal” ASCII characters, such as a hyphen .
b. If a directory contains a filename with an illegal ASCII characters, you can still see all the files by doing a directory (DIR) from DOS.
c. However, one or more files listed after the illegal one might not be accessible or might give errors.
d. You should update MSCDEX to the latest available version.
Top
10. MS-DOS or Windows cannot find CD-R drive
a. There are several reasons why the CD-R drive cannot be found by any software.
b. First, turn the computer off and wait at least 15 sec. Be sure that the SCSI adapter card is firmly seated and secured to the computer case.
c. The adapter must be properly configured.
d. Check the SCSI cable and see that it is properly attached to the adapter & drive .
e. On the computer. If the problem persists, be sure that correct SCSI drivers are installed and that any command line switches are set correctly.
Top
11. The “Disc in” in light on the drive does not blink after you turn on the computer.
a. For internal CD-R drives, be sure that the computer’s 4-pin power cable is properly connected to the CD-R drive unit.
b. For external CD-R drives, be sure that the power cord is properly connected to the back of the CD-R drive unit and is plugged into grounded power outlet.
c. Be sure that the power switch on the back of the drive is on.
d. Refer to your CD-R drive’s installation guide for more details.
Top
12. Write emergency
a. This error occurs if the drive is interrupted during a write action .
b. It is commonly seen when writing red book audio , but it can also occur with data.
c. For example , one typical reason for a write emergency is dust particles that cause the laser to jump off the track.
Top
13. The CD-R is recognized by Windows, but it will not function as a normal CD-Rom drive.
a. The drive appears normally in the windows device manager .
b. The drive that is operating the CD-R drive might not allow the drive to function as a normal CD-Rom reader.
c. For Example, this is known problem with the Philips CDD 2000 CD-R, check to see if an updated windows 95 CD-R driver is available to overcome this limitation.
d. If not, you might need to replace the CD-R drive with an upgraded model whose drivers do support CD-Rom type functionality
Top
14. You cannot read CD-R (gold) discs in some ordinary CD-Rom drives.
a. Laser calibration plays a big role. Some CD-Rom drive lasers are not calibrated to read recordable discs.
b. If your CD-Rom drive reads mass produced CDs, but not recordable CDs, check with its manufacturer to determine whether laser calibration is the problem.
c. The CD-R authoring software can be a problem.A good way to check whether incompatibility problem lies with the originating software is to test the same gold disc on several CD-Rom drives.
d. If one drive is capable of reading the gold disc back correctly, chances are that the problem was not in the recording process.
Top

Hard Disk

1. If data in either root directory or file allocation table is corrupt, one or more sub-directories might be inaccessible by the drive.
b. Try repairing the drive’s structure.
c. Use CHKDSK OR SCANDISK (with dos 6.2 ) to check the disk’s directory structure for problems.
Top
3. This problem arises during installation of new DVD-Rom drive.chances are that you did not connect CD-audio cable between the DVD-Rom drive & sound board. If so cable might be defective.
b. If DVD-Rom drive is connected to sound board , be sure that the “CD-audio” input in your sound board’s mixer applet is turned up to a reasonable level.
Top

5. Video-quality appears poor MPEG-2 compression is well-respected for its ability to reproduce high-quality images.
a. The problem with “poor”age quality is almost because of your video configuration your colour depth or resolution is too low.
b. DVD-Video playback is best at resolution of 800’600 or higher and colour depths of 16 bits or higher of 24 bits.
c. Be sure that the label used in the /D switch is the same for both the low-level driver and MSCDEX,if the label is not same MSCDEX will not load.
f. If you are using MSDOS 5.0,be sure that SERVER utility is loaded.
Top

7. The CD-Rom drivers will not install properly on a drive using compression software.
a. This is usually because you booted from a floppy disk and attempted to install drivers without loading the compression software.
b. Check the loading order-allow your system to boot from the hard drive before installing the CD-Rom drivers.
c. If you boot the system from a floppy disk be sure that the diskette is configured to be fully compatible with the compression software being used.
Top
8. Error indicating that the CD-Rom is drive not found
a. Check the power connector first. If the drive is being powered by a Y-connector , be sure that internal connections are secure.
b. Check the signal connector next, & see that the drive’s signal interface cable is connected securely at the both drive & controller.
c. inspect the drive interface adapter and be sure that the adapter’s IRQ,DMA, &I/O address settings are correct.
d. If your CD-Rom uses SCSI interface , be sure that the SCSI bus is properly terminated at both ends.
e. If problem persist replace the drive adapter.
Top
9. You have trouble setting up more than one CD-Rom drive
a. Check the drive adapter first- be sure that drive adapter will support more than one CD-Rom on the same channel. If not, you have to install another drive adapter to support the new drive.
b. You will need to have one copy of lower-level driver loaded in CONFIG.SYS-one for each drive.
c. Finally check your copy of MSCDEX. You will need only one copy of MSCDEX in Autoexec.bat but switch “/D:” switch must appear twice once for each drive ID.
Top
10. CD-Rom drive refuses to work on IDE Port.
a. The drive might use non-standard port (other than IDE). Try replacing the drive adapter board.
b. You must connect the CD-Rom drive to a compatible drive adapter.
c. If a drive is proprietary it will not interface to a regular IDE port.
d. It might be necessary to purchase a drive adapter specially for the CD-Rom drive.
Top
11. Open CONFIG.SYS in to a word processor and see that the low level driver has accurate command line.
c. Check the MSCDEX command line next open AUTOEXEC.BAT in to word processor .
d. If you are using smart drive with DOS 6.0 or later, try adding /U switch to the end of your smart drive command line in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
e. If problem persists replace the driver controller.
Top
12. When a SCSI CD-Rom drive is connected to a SCSI adapter, the system hangs when its BIOS starts.
a. In most cases, the CD-Rom drive supports plug and play , but the SCSI controller’s BIOS does not. Disable the SCSI BIOS through a jumper on the controller and use a SCSI driver in CONFIG.SYS instead.
b. Removing extra fonts for speed
Windows XP has over 250 different font variations that it loads for use when the system boots up. Of these 250 variations, only a handful are used on a regular basis. Most likely, you really only use the core Windows fonts, such as Tahoma,Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana,Trebuchet, and MS Sans Serif. Simply put, loading a lot of fonts will take more time, because the system has to load and index each font. Thankfully, there is a very simple answer to this: Just remove the fonts that you do not use from your font directory. The best way is to move the unused fonts to a separate folder on your system so that if you ever want to use one of those extra fonts again, you just have to copy it back to the fonts folder. Part II — Increasing Your System’s Performance
Recommended Fonts to Keep
Font Name : Reason
Verdana: Often used on Web pages and applications
Arial : Often used within applications such as Outlook Trebuchet Used in the Windows interface on the Title Bar
Tahoma : Used in the Windows interface on the Menu Bar as well as in many applications and Web pages
Times New Roman : The default font for Web pages as well as applications such as Word
MS Sans Serif : Used in some applications and Web pages
Control panel-font-(select font and delete)
Top
2. Increse Bandwidth By 20% (XP Users)
Well if you are tired of the lessened speed of your internet then here is the better approach to increse the bandwidth.Actually the Xp reserves the bandwidth for Quality of Service(QOS) which works for downloading of the xp updates in parallel with the motion of the normal course internet. If we try to manage the Qos then we can augment user bandwidth by 20%.
Just Follow the process :-
Click Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc”.
This opens the group policy editor.
Then go to: Local Computer Policy–>Computer Configuration–>Administrative Templates–>Network–>QOS Packet Scheduler–>Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab .
Then Enable it and set Bandwidth to 0% click ok.
Top
3. Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your computer
If you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. Here's a recipe for a desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:
Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'
You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.
In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.
Top
5.
